After our visit with
Dr. Parsons last Wednesday, Elizabeth has been officially diagnoses with
Idiopathic Epilepsy. The neurologist says that calling it idiopathic
basically means that they aren't smart
enough to figure out what causes Elizabeth's seizures. Although I don't think
that our neurologists are "idiots", I do wish that there was a more
specific diagnosis allowing us to better understand triggers and prevention.
Even still, we are
happy that they have given Elizabeth's episodes a diagnosis and management. We
will continue with her medications for another year or two and then, assuming
she is seizure free, we will slowly take her ween her off of the meds. Because
Elizabeth's EEGs and assessments have been normal, Dr. Parsons is very
confident that Elizabeth will grow out of the condition. 70% of children who
present with Idiopathic Epilepsy grow out of the condition. We will pray that
Elizabeth is part of that percentage and in the mean time, we will work hard to
keep her medicated and to keep the triggers, namely sleep deprivation, to a
minimum.
Thank you for all of
your support over the last year. We are so fortunate to have such supportive
and concerned friends and family in our lives.
